Sylvan Learning: More Than Just Tutoring

Seven locations in Austin, Bastrop,
Leander, Round Rock and San Marcos

At Sylvan, we know you have a lot of choices when it comes to finding a tutor. But if you’re looking for a personalized learning plan, proven systems, flexible scheduling, and guaranteed results, then you don’t have to look further than Sylvan Learning. Our system -- combining certified teachers; individualized instruction; research-based curricula; and intensive program supervision and quality assurance -- will help your child succeed in school. More importantly, your child will gain the academic confidence necessary to develop a lifelong love of learning - the greatest gift you can give your child.

Tutoring Subjects

Our programs range from beginning reading to advanced math, and include writing, study skills, and homework help. Each of these programs can be scheduled according to your family's needs and calendar. We also offer excellent programs for students preparing for college entrance exams, such as the SAT or ACT, which are scheduled based on the calendar for the administration of the exams.

How Does Sylvan Tutoring Work?

The first step is to assess each child's specific abilities and needs. The Sylvan Skills Assessment is used to identify specific gaps in a student's knowledge base, and to develop a customized curriculum to fill those specific gaps. This approach ensures that no time is wasted teaching skills your child has already mastered, enabling your child and our teachers to devote the time and effort necessary to master the specific skills your child needs. It is the emphasis on mastery of each skill that leads to the high levels of confidence and enjoyment so many students experience from their time at Sylvan. Your child's individualized curriculum provides just the right skill challenge, not too easy or too hard. Students enjoy earning rewards (and ample praise) for their effort as they work through their program. In most cases, even students who dislike school look forward to their time at Sylvan.

Quality Assurance at Every Step

While certified teachers provide the instruction, each hour of instruction is lesson-planned by the center's Director of Education, and academic growth and quality assurance are constantly monitored by the Center Director. Your child's program may be adjusted along thed way based on results from ongoing assessments, observations from our tutors or Directors, and feedback from the student's classroom teacher or counselor. Our Directors regularly confer not only with the student's parents but also with student's classroom teachers to ensure we are reinforcing each other's efforts at home, in the classroom, and at Sylvan.

Our Progress Guarantee

Sylvan tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. We provide an entire system of education experts and research-based curricula to support your child. We are so confident in the quality of our academic programs, we guarantee your child will improve one full grade level after the first 36 hours of instruction. If not, your child will receive additional tutoring at no cost.

Testimonials

Confidence

"Heather is doing substantially better since she started the tutoring with you guys. I'm very proud of her. She actively engages in class discussions and is usually one of the few kids who answers the tougher questions. It's such a dramatic change that I hardly recognize her. Thank you so much and please continue doing whatever it is you're doing."

Rita Castriotta, 7th grade teacher at Ann Richards School; Spring 2009

Reading

"I just wanted to call and tell you guys thank you. We were at Whataburger last night and my son picked up the newspaper and started reading it to me out loud. He's NEVER done that before! He did well with most of the words, and read with confidence. When he finished, there was the biggest smile on his face! You guys do a great job and I just wanted to say thank you and keep up the good work!"

Ruben, father of Mason, a student at the Learning Center in Bastrop, TX, summer 2009

MATH

"My son struggled with math for years. I had heard about Sylvan but never really took the time to investigate. My son really began to suffer in school and was feeling very insecure about himself. Finally, I called the toll free number and the young lady was very patient, kind and seemed to understand exactly what our situation was! I felt like she really cared. So I went in and talked to the director. April listened to me like I was an old friend. I cried and she gave me tissues. I told her what the problems were and she had answers! I felt so reassured. I felt like Sylvan could help my son be better in math and be a better student overall. And almost 9 months later I am astonished at the progress my son has made! He is 100% better than he was when we first went to Sylvan. He LOVES going to Sylvan. The people are friendly, encouraging, kind, patient and FUN! I am so thankful that we made the decision to enroll my son. I know that an investment in my son is an investment in a better FUTURE for our entire family and even our community. Better students produce more effective and productive citizens! Thank you April, Heather and Sylvan for putting my son on the right track! I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!"

TAKS

A note we received from a Sylvan parent:

Hi Kelli & Jaime,

I wanted to say a couple of words to the both of you. When we 1st walked into sylvan, Mckayla and I knew it was the right decision to have Mckayla come here. Of course we both knew it was going to be a long road for Mckayla because of the lack of foundation she had from 2nd grade.

As time went on, we both had noticed that she was progressing. It was slow for her because she still didn't understand why things didn't come so easy for her, but when she would come home and used what y'all had taught her, it was amazing. I knew in my heart she was slowly but surely going to get it. More time had passed and I noticed that at points in her homework I needed to no longer help her because she was doing it on her own. I couldn't believe it. Her homework would go by faster. McKayla would tell me,"Sylvan is helping and I can tell."

Every month we would meet together and see how much her test scores were improving. It was so comforting to see how teachers there cared and welcomed her every time she would walk in the doors. Thanks for the way you have set up Sylvan. I can honestly say that my child was not left behind. She grew from this experience, learned new strategies for work, and now has more confidence in herself. When she puts her mind to it, she can reach for the stars and no one will stop her. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, for everything.

Also, I wanted to let you know I received great news today. Mckayla called me today at her lunch and told me she passed her TASK test with an 83. We both cried and she knew her hard work had paid off. Her long road is coming to an end in 3rd grade but be re-assured that we will continue with math and reading at the house and over the summer. We both know she cannot slack off. Fourth grade is right around the corner. :) Thanks for all of your help, understanding, and for being there for McKayla.

SAT

A note we received from one of our SAT students:

Dear Ms. Bunning,

I received my SAT scores earlier this week. Previously, before your prep program, I had received a 560 in reading, 680 in math, and a 550 in witing, with my total score of 1790.

As I took the SAT for a second time this June, my scores increased to a 640 in reading, 730 in math, and a 600 in writing! A combined score of 1970! Thank you so much, Sylvan, for all of your help last month and for the improvements on my test score. Thank you Jack and Ashley for helping me out when needed. I couldn't have done it without all your help!
